Feeling is one of the most miraculous gifts of the human experience. To feel ecstasy in the midst of a thunderstorm, and to feel devastation at the thought of losing yourself in someone else - these are the contrasts that color our lives - these are the moments that carry enormous potential if we choose to unlock it.
The key to riding the emotional wave is to first allow yourself to. Resistance and suppression will only lead to a slow burn of destruction. When the feeling hits, dance with it. Move with it. Flow with it. Don’t let it stagnate. Honor what it’s sharing with you. The only way out is through. The most scenic way out is through. The most rewarding way out is through.
While walking through the experience, while allowing yourself to feel through the emotional wisdom, recognize that you are not the emotion itself. Recognize that you are the soul choosing to suffer (if it’s a subjectively “negative” experience). Recognize that you are the soul choosing to saturate in bliss (if it’s a subjectively “positive” experience). Or recognize that you are the soul choosing to truly reap the knowledge the experience is yearning to transmit. When choosing the latter, feel how outward joy can transform into still inner peace. Feel how visceral pain can transform into still inner peace. This is the process of letting go.
Once you’ve honored the experience, once you’ve honored the feeling sensation within the experience, and once you can say “I’ve grown from this”, it organically becomes the time to let go. Letting go feels like the most radiant sunrise inside of the heart. When you truly let go, gratitude takes hold. In true gratitude we no longer say “I’m going to grow and move on in spite of this”, but “I’m moving on and growing even more because of this”.
